Eberhard II served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1200 to 1246 — one of the longest episcopates of the medieval German church — and was a persistent antagonist of both Emperor Frederick II and the papacy at various points, navigating the Investiture conflicts that still shaped ecclesiastical minting rights in this period. Friesach, located in Carinthia, had been a Salzburg mint town since the mid-twelfth century and became the dominant source of the thin, broad bracteate-style deniers that saturated trade across the eastern Alpine region.
