| Beschrijving voorzijde | Frontal bust of the bishop within a beaded inner circle, rendered in crude relief characteristic of early medieval hammered coinage. The effigy is depicted holding a staff or scepter, with a stylized face showing large eyes and schematic facial features. The surrounding field is filled with a roughly incised legend reading CVNO EPS, identifying the issuer as Bishop Cunon. The overall composition is enclosed within a double or beaded border typical of Ottonian-era episcopal deniers. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
Cunon de Michelbach served as Bishop of Strasbourg from 1100 to 1123, a period defined by his navigation of the Investiture Controversy — the bitter contest between the papacy and the Holy Roman Emperor over the right to appoint church officials. Strasbourg's bishops occupied a precarious political position throughout this conflict, holding temporal authority over the city while owing allegiances in multiple directions.
Episcopal deniers of this period from the Upper Rhine region are poorly documented in surviving records, and die studies remain incomplete. The Kluge-Kahnert reference provides the primary attribution anchor for this type.
