Cunon de Michelbach served as Bishop of Strasbourg from 1100 to 1123, a period defined by his navigation of the Investiture Controversy — the bitter contest between the papacy and the Holy Roman Emperor over the right to appoint church officials. Strasbourg's bishops occupied a precarious political position throughout this conflict, holding temporal authority over the city while owing allegiances in multiple directions.
