A surrounding legend in Latin capital letters reads ✠ GRΛTIΛ D-I REX, denoting Charles as king by the grace of God, and is separated from the central motif by the beaded circle. The flan is irregular in shape, typical of hammered Carolingian coinage of the ninth century. |
