| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the Carolingian monogram of KAROLUS, composed of interlaced letters in a bold, angular hammered style, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The monogram incorporates the letters K, A, R, O, L, and S in the characteristic Carolingian fashion. A surrounding legend in Latin capital letters reads ✠ GRΛTIΛ D-I REX, denoting Charles as king by the grace of God, and is separated from the central motif by the beaded circle. The flan is irregular in shape, typical of hammered Carolingian coinage of the ninth century. |
