The cross arms extend nearly to the inner beaded border, dividing the inner field into four equal quarters. Surrounding the beaded circle, the outer legend is struck in partially retrograde and barbarized Latin lettering, identifying the mint as Mons (modern Mons, in present-day Belgium). The flan is irregular and slightly convex, consistent with hand-hammered Carolingian silver deniers of the late ninth century. |
