The Abbey of Corbie, founded in 657 near Amiens, held minting rights confirmed under Carolingian authority — one of a handful of ecclesiastical establishments permitted to strike coin in their own precinct during the reign of Charles II. The Edict of Pîtres in 864 was a defining moment for this coinage: Charles attempted to rationalize Frankish minting by restricting production to a limited number of authorized locations, and Corbie was among those that survived the cull.
