| Obverse description | Within a beaded inner circle, the Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II (Karolus monogram) occupies the central field, composed of interlaced letters in the characteristic Carolingian style. The monogram is boldly rendered in high relief typical of hammered coinage. Surrounding the beaded circle, a Latin legend runs clockwise in the outer field. The overall design reflects the standard Carolingian denier type established by the Edict of Pîtres (864). |
