Obverse description Central field occupied by an interlaced knot or monogram device enclosed within a beaded inner circle, surrounded by a further beaded border. The royal monogram, composed of intertwined letters forming the Carolingian KAROLUS cipher, is rendered in the bold, schematic style characteristic of mid-ninth-century Frankish coinage. The surrounding circular legend, separated from the central device by the beaded border, reads the royal titulature in capital Latin letters. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, consistent with hand-struck hammered production of the Carolingian period.
