| Opis awersu | A plain cross with splayed arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, initiated by a cross pattée, reads CARLVS REX FR in large Carolingian capital letters distributed around the outer field. The flan is irregular in outline, as is characteristic of ninth-century hammered Carolingian deniers, and the lettering displays the bold, somewhat rustic engraving typical of the Noyon workshop. The overall composition follows the standard Carolingian denier obverse type established under the monetary reform of Louis the Pious. |
