Obverse description Carolingian royal monogram occupying the central field, composed of interlaced letters forming the name KAROLVS, set within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is rendered in bold relief in the characteristic Carolingian style, with individual letterforms clearly articulated. A circular Latin legend surrounds the beaded circle, reading in full around the coin's periphery. The overall composition is typical of Carolingian palace-type deniers struck under Charles II (the Bald) and Charles III (the Simple).
