Obverse description Central field features a Carolingian monogram enclosed within a beaded inner circle, formed by interlaced capital letters rendered in the characteristic palace script style of the period. The monogram is composed of geometric interlocking strokes, typical of the royal cipher used under the later Carolingian rulers. Surrounding the inner circle, a circular Latin legend in capital letters reads GRACIA D-I REX, proclaiming the king's divine mandate. The coin is struck on an irregular flan with characteristic medieval hammered texture, and the design elements show slight weakness consistent with hand-striking techniques of the 9th–10th centuries.
