Obverse description A plain cross with equal arms occupies the central field within a beaded inner circle. The royal imperial legend CARLVS IMPR (Emperor Charles) is arranged in retrograde or irregular lettering around the outer circumference, separated by a cross pattée. The overall design is characteristic of the Carolingian denier type, struck with a hand-hammered die producing slight irregularity of flan and lettering. The beaded border is well defined, and the cross arms extend to the inner circle.
