The die-cut lettering is characteristic of the Carolingian reform coinage introduced under the Edict of Pîtres (864), with angular, deeply struck letterforms typical of ninth-century Frankish hammered silver. The entire design is contained within an outer beaded border following the irregular flan edge. |
