| Obverse description | A plain cross with expanded terminals occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, reading clockwise in large Carolingian capitals, names the ruler as Charles, king of the Franks. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, typical of ninth-century hammered Carolingian silver coinage, with the lettering bold but unevenly struck. |
