Additional information

Charles II — Charles the Bald — was granted Lotharingia by the Treaty of Mersen in 870, following the death of his nephew Lothair II and a negotiated partition with his brother Louis the German. This denier belongs to that narrow window of Carolingian control over a kingdom that had been bitterly contested and would continue to change hands. The absence of a Morrison reference is notable; pieces from this issue surface rarely enough that the standard corpus remains incomplete for some die combinations.
