| Obverse description | The field displays the ruler's name CAROLUS inscribed in two horizontal lines in large, bold raised Latin lettering, divided as CARO in the upper register and LVS in the lower register. The inscription occupies the majority of the coin's flat field, characteristic of the early Carolingian epigraphic denier type. The flan is irregular and slightly chipped, with a beaded inner border encircling the legend. The die work is bold but somewhat crude, consistent with the early hammered coinage of Charlemagne's reign prior to the monetary reform. |
