The legend CARL RX F — an abbreviation for Carolus Rex Francorum, meaning Charles, King of the Franks — is rendered in a robust, somewhat archaic lapidary style characteristic of early Carolingian coinage. The entire design is contained within a plain, irregularly shaped flan with a slightly beaded or crenellated rim produced by the hammering process.
