| Obverse description | The obverse field displays the royal inscription arranged in two horizontal lines of boldly struck capital letters, separated by a raised horizontal bar and surmounted by a second bar forming a canopy above the uppermost line of text. The legend CARL RX F — an abbreviation for Carolus Rex Francorum, meaning Charles, King of the Franks — is rendered in a robust, somewhat archaic lapidary style characteristic of early Carolingian coinage. The entire design is contained within a plain, irregularly shaped flan with a slightly beaded or crenellated rim produced by the hammering process. No effigy or figural element is present, the inscription alone serving as the principal device. The execution is typical of the early monetary reform issues struck under Charlemagne prior to his consolidation of the reformed heavy denier standard. |
