| Opis awersu | The obverse field bears the royal name CAROLVS arranged in two lines across the coin face in large, boldly rendered Carolingian majuscule letters, reading CAR on the upper register and LVS below, filling the entire field. The lettering is executed in high relief against a flat, unadorned field, characteristic of early Carolingian hammered coinage. A plain inner border is present, with a beaded outer border encircling the design. No effigy or cross appears on this face; the inscription itself constitutes the sole decorative and identifying element, asserting the authority of Charlemagne (Carolus) as ruler. |
