The lettering is executed in high relief against a flat, unadorned field, characteristic of early Carolingian hammered coinage. A plain inner border is present, with a beaded outer border encircling the design. No effigy or cross appears on this face; the inscription itself constitutes the sole decorative and identifying element, asserting the authority of Charlemagne (Carolus) as ruler. |
