Reverse description Central field features an elaborate monogram or interlaced decorative motif composed of curvilinear and angular elements, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The interstitial areas of the central device are filled with small pellets and scroll-like ornaments, characteristic of Carolingian die engraving of the reform period. The outer annular zone between the inner beaded border and the outer rim carries the mint and issue legend in bold, somewhat irregular Latin capitals. The overall composition reflects the distinctive epigraphic and artistic conventions of the Melle mint during Charlemagne's new coinage.
