The surrounding annular band between the inner beaded border and the outer linear rim carries the royal legend in retrograde or irregular Latin characters. The lettering is rendered in the bold, somewhat angular Carolingian epigraphic style characteristic of the new coinage reform type. No portrait or effigy appears, consistent with the aniconic monetary policy of Charlemagne's reformed coinage. The overall design is simple and austere, emphasising the cross as the dominant symbolic element. |
