| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse displays the royal name CAROLVS arranged in two lines across the field, divided by a central cross motif, reading CARO in the upper half and LVS in the lower half. The bold, angular Carolingian majuscule letterforms are deeply struck and fill the flan. A beaded border encircles the entire design, consistent with the monogram-style type characteristic of early Carolingian silver deniers struck under Charlemagne before the introduction of the portrait type circa 793. |
