Struck in the years before Charlemagne's monetary reform of 793–794, this denier belongs to the pre-reform coinage that the Capitulare missorum of 794 rendered obsolete almost overnight. That reform — which mandated heavier, standardized pennies at roughly 1.7g and tightened control over which mints could strike — effectively devalued and demonetized the entire earlier lightweight series. The moneyer name Odalricus places responsibility for this piece with a named individual, a practice that survived into the reform coinage and reflects Carolingian accountability policy rather than mere convention.
