Multiple pellets (dots) are scattered throughout the four quarters of the field, a distinctive feature of this abbey issue. The circumferential legend SCI CRVCIS (Holy Cross) surrounds the central design, referencing the Holy Cross Abbey (Sainte-Croix) at whose authority this denier was struck. The overall composition is typical of early Carolingian ecclesiastical coinage, with the cross serving as the dominant devotional motif. |
