| Opis awersu | Central field dominated by a plain Latin cross with expanded terminals, the letters C, A, R, L, V, and S distributed in the four quadrants and angles formed by the cross arms, spelling the royal name CARLVS. The letter A appears in the upper left quadrant, R in the upper right, L in the lower left, V and S in the lower right area, and C to the left, all rendered in bold, slightly irregular hammered capitals characteristic of early Carolingian epigraphy. The coin is enclosed by a continuous outer border of raised beads. The flan is irregular and slightly concave, consistent with hand-struck silver of the period. No effigy is present, reflecting the aniconic monetary tradition of the early Carolingian reform coinage. |
