Carloman I ruled jointly with his brother Charlemagne following the death of Pepin the Short in 768, a division of the Frankish kingdom that lasted only three years before Carloman's death in 771 — after which Charlemagne absorbed his territories entirely. Ecclesiastical mints operating under royal authority, including that attached to the collegiate church of Saint-Aignan at Orléans, were actively producing coinage during this narrow window, making any attribution to Carloman's reign a matter of tight chronological precision.
The Gariel and Morrison concordance places this type firmly within the Carolingian reorganization of silver coinage that Pepin had initiated and his sons inherited.
