Carloman I ruled jointly with his brother Charlemagne for just three years before his death in 771 — at which point Charlemagne absorbed his territories entirely, sidelining Carloman's infant sons and forcing his widow Gerberga into exile in Lombardy. Coins struck under Carloman's sole authority during this narrow window are consequently rare; the joint reign produced a fragmented minting geography, with abbeys and episcopal centers operating under competing administrative pressures.
