Reverse description A bold, plain cross occupies the center of the field, its four arms extending nearly to the surrounding legend, a design closely associated with ecclesiastical Carolingian issues. The circular legend SCI CRVCIS, referring to the Holy Cross, is distributed around the cross in the field, rendered in irregular hammered capital letters. The inscription evokes the patronage of the Holy Cross Abbey, identifying this denier as a monastic or abbey-associated issue. The flan is irregular and slightly wavy at the edges, typical of hand-struck early medieval silver coinage. The overall composition reflects the religious character of Carolingian monetary production during the reign of Carloman I.
