| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field dominated by a stylized monogram composed of interlaced letters, characteristic of Carolingian and Ottonian denier coinage, rendered in bold relief with angular forms. The monogram is flanked by decorative elements and occupies the full face of the flan. The surrounding field is plain with the irregular hammered edge typical of mid-tenth-century German ecclesiastical and feudal coinage. The inscription BVRCHARDVS VX runs in the legend around the monogram, identifying the issuing authority as Duke Burchard III of Swabia. The overall die work reflects the rudimentary yet distinctive style of the Breisach mint during the Ottonian period. |
