Wilbrand of Käfernburg's tenure as Archbishop of Magdeburg coincided with sustained conflict between the archbishopric and the surrounding Ascanian margraves over territorial jurisdiction east of the Elbe — a rivalry that made independent coin production a matter of political as much as economic necessity. Bracteates of this region and period were struck on exceptionally thin flans, making survival in any collectible condition genuinely uncommon. The Berger and Bonhomme references both document significant die variation across Wilbrand's issues, and specimens attributable to this type should be cross-checked against Mehl's die census before firm attribution.
