Wilbrand of Käfernburg's tenure as Archbishop of Magdeburg coincided with sustained conflict between the archbishopric and the surrounding Ascanian margraves over territorial jurisdiction east of the Elbe — a rivalry that made independent coin production a matter of political as much as economic necessity.
