Udalschalk II served as Bishop of Augsburg from 1184 until his death in 1202, a tenure that coincided with the intensifying struggle between the Hohenstaufen emperors and the papacy over ecclesiastical appointments and temporal authority in the German bishoprics. Augsburg's position on the Via Claudia Augusta made it one of the more commercially active sees in Bavaria, and the bishop's right to mint was both a revenue tool and a political assertion.
Bracteates of this type are struck on a single thin flan, making survival without cracking or distortion uncommon. The Löbbecke reference places this piece within a well-documented private collection that was dispersed at auction in 1905.
