Albert of Käfernburg served as Archbishop of Magdeburg from 1205 to 1232, a tenure marked by persistent conflict with the Hohenstaufen emperors over ecclesiastical autonomy and territorial rights in the eastern marches. The bracteate format — struck on a single thin flan from one die, leaving a mirror impression on the reverse — was the dominant coinage technology in central and northern Germany through much of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and Magdeburg remained one of its most prolific producers.
The "Moritzpfennig" designation ties this piece to St. Maurice, patron of the Magdeburg archdiocese since Otto I founded the cathedral in his honor in 968.
