Mieszko III's deniers bractéates belong to the fragmented political world created by Bolesław III's 1138 testament, which deliberately partitioned Poland among his sons and established the seniorate principle — an arrangement that produced decades of dynastic conflict rather than the stability intended. Mieszko himself was expelled from Kraków twice, spending years in exile before recovering Greater Poland as his operational base. These thin, single-sided strikes were the monetary output of that turbulent administration.
Attribution to either Gniezno or Kalisz remains unresolved; both mints operated under ducal authority during his tenure, and die evidence has not conclusively separated the two production centers.
