John II Nix held the see of Speyer from 1459 until his death in 1464, a tenure short enough that his issues are genuinely scarce. The bracteate format — a single-sided coin struck on a thin flan — was already archaic by the mid-fifteenth century in most of the Reich, but ecclesiastical mints in the upper Rhine valley continued striking them well past their practical prime, partly out of conservatism and partly because the lightweight fabric satisfied local small-change needs without competing with the heavier silver coinage of neighboring secular lords.
