Hermann of Arbon served as Bishop of Constance from 1138 to 1165, a tenure marked by his close alignment with the Hohenstaufen dynasty during the broader struggle between imperial and papal factions. The bracteate format — a single-sided coin struck on a thin flan — was characteristic of southern German and Swiss ecclesiastical minting in the twelfth century, where bishops operated mints as a tangible expression of their imperial privileges. Constance held one of the more active episcopal mints of the Upper Rhine region during this period.
The extreme thinness of bracteate flans makes struck examples prone to cracking at the edges, a known fragility with this type rather than evidence of mishandling.
