| Obverse description | Full-length frontal effigy of Landgrave Hermann I, crowned and robed in regal attire, holding a processional cross-staff in his right hand and a banner-lance in his left. Flanking the figure on either side are stylized architectural towers rendered in the Romanesque manner, each set upon a stepped base. The composition is enclosed within a double beaded inner circle, with a partially legible Latin legend occupying the outer annular field. The relief is bold and characteristic of high-quality Thuringian bracteate production of the late 12th to early 13th century. |
