Henry II of Klingenberg governed the Bishopric of Constance during a period of intense rivalry between episcopal and secular powers along the Upper Rhine, and his bracteates reflect the administrative urgency of a prelate who needed functioning regional currency more than artistic ambition. Bracteates of this type circulated almost exclusively within the diocese's immediate economic sphere — thin enough to fold, they wore rapidly and survivors in any decent state are genuinely scarce.
The Klingenberg family held considerable influence in the region before Henry's appointment in 1293, a fact that almost certainly smoothed his elevation despite the fractious politics of the Swabian church.
