Eberhard II served as Bishop of Constance from 1248 to 1274, a tenure marked by persistent conflict with the Habsburgs over territorial rights in the upper Rhine region. Bracteates of this type were struck as thin single-sided uniface pieces — a minting convention that dominated southern German and Swiss ecclesiastical coinage throughout the 13th century, partly because the shallow relief required less silver per blank. The Bishopric of Constance was one of the wealthiest sees in the Empire at this period, controlling mint rights that secular lords repeatedly attempted to contest or absorb.
