The concave field displays the incuse impression of the crowned letter S and flanking pellet, with the surrounding ring border visible in negative relief. Albert of Mecklenburg claimed the Swedish throne in 1364 after a coalition of disaffected Swedish magnates invited him to displace Magnus Eriksson, whose reign had become politically and financially untenable. These thin, fragile bracteates — struck on a single die through a single face of the blank — represent the coinage of a king who spent much of his reign fighting to hold what he had been handed, and ultimately lost it to Margaret I of Denmark at the Battle of Åsle in 1389, the same year his coinage ceased.
