Episcopal minting rights in Poland during the late twelfth century were granted piecemeal by the Piast dukes, often as political concessions during the chronic fragmentation that followed Bolesław III's division of the kingdom in 1138. Stefan of Kujawy held the see of Włocławek during precisely this period of ducal competition, when ecclesiastical mints occasionally operated with greater monetary authority than the secular powers nominally above them. Włocławek's position on the Vistula made it a commercially active center despite its modest size.
Kopicki 231 is among the rarer documented episcopal issues from Kujawy.
