The bishops of Lausanne held coinage rights granted by the Holy Roman Emperor, but the "anonymous" character of this denier reflects a deliberate episcopal policy — by omitting the issuing bishop's name, the coin remained valid across successive administrations without requiring a new issue at each enthronement. It was a practical solution to the chronic instability of episcopal succession in the Burgundian dioceses during the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries.
