The Abbey of Thorn, situated in the Meuse valley in what is now the southern Netherlands, held the right to strike coin by imperial grant — an unusual privilege for an institution governed by a chapter of secular canonesses rather than monks. These anonymous deniers circulated locally during a period when ecclesiastical minting rights were actively contested between regional lords and church institutions throughout the Lower Lorraine region.
The Kluge Karlinger reference places this within a documented series, though attribution to Thorn specifically rests on find-site evidence and die comparisons accumulated across the twentieth century.
