Andrew II's reign was defined less by monetary policy than by the 1222 Golden Bull — Hungary's foundational constitutional document, extracted from the king by rebellious nobility after years of reckless land grants had stripped the crown of its revenue base. The fiscal pressure that necessitated those grants is reflected in the coinage: Andrew debased the silver content of his deniers progressively through the reign, a practice documented in contemporary complaints lodged by the nobility and clergy alike.
