| Obverse description | Monogram field type: the abbreviated name and title of Prince Adelchis rendered as an interlaced monogram composed of the letters ADL (Adelchis) and PR (Princeps), arranged centrally within the coin field in bold raised relief. The monogram is enclosed within a beaded border, typical of Lombard-Beneventan hammered silver coinage. The surrounding legend in Latin reads SANCTA MARIA P ADL R, invoking the protection of the Virgin Mary over the prince. The irregular flan and variable letter placement reflect the characteristic hand-struck production technique of the Benevento mint in the ninth century. |
