The lettering is rendered in the angular, compressed Cyrillic script characteristic of early Muscovite wire coinage, with individual characters showing the archaic forms typical of 15th-century Russian epigraphy. The inscription identifies the ruler as Grand Duke Vasiliy, asserting his sovereign title in the traditional formula of the period. The flan is irregular and the inscription is partially visible depending on strike placement. |

Vasily II lost his sight in 1446 when his cousin Dmitry Shemyaka had him seized and blinded — a brutal act in a dynastic civil war over the Muscovite throne that dragged on for decades. The Mozhaysk-style denga predates that mutilation, struck during the earlier, relatively stable years of his reign before the conflict consumed everything. Mozhaysk itself had been absorbed into the Moscow principality under his grandfather Dmitry Donskoy, and the coinage borrowing its stylistic conventions reflects Moscow's ongoing project of consolidating appanage identities under a single minting tradition.
