Additional information

Vasily Dmitrievich of Nizhny Novgorod struck coins during a politically precarious window following the Muscovite annexation of the principality in 1392. His coinage represents a persistent assertion of local dynastic authority under pressure from Moscow — the Nizhny Novgorod princes continued issuing their own денги well into the fifteenth century despite the grand principality's formal absorption. The HP II#1950А designation places this among the more precisely catalogued varieties of a series that remains difficult to attribute without die study.
