Frederick II here refers not to the Holy Roman Emperor but to Federico Vanga, Prince-Bishop of Trento, whose episcopate coincided with a prolonged struggle between imperial and papal factions for control of the Alpine passes. Trento's mint output during this period was caught directly in that tension — the prince-bishops held temporal authority by imperial grant, yet answered spiritually to Rome. The "F" initial anchors the coin firmly to Federico's pontificate rather than to any of his successors, a useful anchor given how often small billon issues of the region are misattributed.
