Pellegrino II ruled the Patriarchate of Aquileia from 1195 to 1204, wielding both ecclesiastical and temporal authority over a territory that sat uncomfortably between the competing pressures of the Holy Roman Empire and the rising communes of northeastern Italy. His denari are among the earliest securely attributed issues of the Aquileian mint, and Bernardi's cataloguing of this type as number 8 places it near the foundation of the patriarchal coinage sequence.
